Welcome to Root Raiders, my submission for Mini Jam 166. I bit off more than I could chew with this one, and as a result this game is short, bug-laden, and not particularly fun. But, I did learn a lot while making it, and I saw it through to completion – something I really struggle with – so I'm calling this a personal win. I look forward to participating in the next jam with a better plan and more sensible scope.

The Premise

In this game, you are a gnome who lives in a great old tree in the forest. One day the tree is invaded by a horde of fungal monsters intent on rotting it to the ground. With your club in hand, you set out to defeat these monsters and reclaim the tree for the forest.

Gameplay/Controls

This game is a simple 2D platformer played in a series of non-scrolling screens.

The controls are:

  • Arrow keys - Movement
  • X or Spacebar - Jump
  • Z or Ctrl - Attack with club

NOTE: After defeating all the enemies in a level, the door to the next will open. Reach the open door to proceed to the next level.

About This Entry

The optional theme for this jam was Earth and the mandatory restriction was "No Green".

After some consideration, I decided to interpret the restriction literally. I thought it would be an interesting challenge to use the theme as inspiration and try to craft something with a nature-y vibe without using the color green. So, I drew all the graphics used during the duration of the jam with Aseprite, using the ENDESGA 64 palette with its 6 shades of green removed.

Audio Credits

Sound effects in this game were made primarily with jsfxr and Audacity. However, I also used the following CC0 music and sound effects taken from OpenGameArt.org.

I liked the sound direction and art style!

being able to only attack when grounded was an interesting challenge.

after level 3 my screen stayed black though.

did you make the art yourself?

Thank you! Yes, I made the art myself using Aseprite. Sounds like you encountered a bug after level 3 -- I probably should've spent as much time on code as I did on the artwork lol

The attack doesn't work very well and doesn't work at all when jumping. The hitboxes are too small. It's just not enjoyable at all.

Thank you for the feedback, those are fair points. These are considerations I would have probably acted on had I had more time, but unfortunately I was limited to 72 hours. Thank you for giving my game a play!

Hey, the design, art style, and music are very charming!

I didn't find any bugs, the only issue I had was that sometimes I wanted to pick up apples but I had to pass in front of the door, which automatically sent me to the next level 🍎

The mechanics are a little repetitive, but I found it quite solid and enjoyable, congratulations! 🚀

Thank you for playing, and for your kind feedback! I agree on the door thing; If I were to do a revised version, I would definitely change the doors to only activate when you press 'up', or something similar. Oh -- and I'd add way more content, lol.
